If you're gearing up for a dental appointment, it's important to know that regular visits, ideally twice a year, can help catch potential issues early and ensure timely treatment. At Hammond Pond Dental Group, we outline the process of a comprehensive oral exam from beginning to end. Initially, we will gather your medical history, which is crucial for the dentist to understand any underlying conditions such as diabetes, pregnancy, allergies, or chemotherapy treatments.
We recognize that patients often seek clarity regarding procedures, duration, costs, and aftercare to ease their concerns. It’s important to remember that each patient is different and requires care specific to their needs. Our Chestnut Hill dentists provide a variety of preventive, restorative, specialty, and cosmetic dental services for all of your dental needs.
What to Expect
During the examination, our skilled dentist will utilize a small, angled mirror and a metal probe to inspect your teeth and soft tissues for any issues. This examination allows for a thorough assessment of areas that may be difficult to see, such as behind and between teeth, where exposed dentin, worn enamel, and hidden cavities may exist. If no issues are found, our team will get you scheduled for a cleaning with one of our registered dental hygienists; however, if the dentist identifies signs of infection, bleeding, cavities, or gum pockets, suitable treatment options will be suggested & discussed, at which point the dentist can answer any questions you may have. For example, deeper gum pockets may indicate periodontal disease, necessitating further intervention. Additionally, the dentist will check for malocclusion, jaw pain (TMJ/TMD), and any abnormalities in the neck, cheeks, and lips.
Dental X-Rays and How They Help with Diagnosis
To enhance diagnostic accuracy, the dentist may require x-rays, which involve biting down on a specially designed plastic material to reveal any bite issues, fractures, chips, or cavities. During this process, the dentist may also gently palpate under the neck while you bite down to listen for any clicking or popping sounds in the jaw. We proudly offer comprehensive oral exams in the Chestnut Hill area to ensure your dental health is well-managed.
